clkwrk 004

clkwrk 004 is a square chronograph with a big date at 12 o'clock and a modest size of 38mm. Inside is a Miyota 6S50 movement, delivering timekeeping to the dial via three registers and three center hands. Outside is a 3D printed case comprising just two main components and a laser engraved dial to achieve multiple colors and depths.

CASE DESIGN

Inspired by the likes of Bell & Ross, Audemars Piget, and Hublot, 004 features front-mounted screws that are actually functional. Passing through clearance holes in the main case, the M2.5 machine screws mate to threaded bosses in 004's case back.

Square watches tend to wear large compared to their circular counterparts, so a 38mm case size and short lugs help 004 achieve a more reasonable wrist presence. The 20mm lug width is common, and pushing the case:lug width past the traditional 2:1 contributes to the masculine proportions of the design.

DIAL DESIGN

When it comes to tool watches, legibility is king. High contrast, thoughtfully designated hand coloration, and only the most essential markings help 004 achieve maximum legibility and minimal clutter. By laser engraving  the dial, multiple colors and depths can be achieved from a single piece of stock. This gives the effect of applied indices without the complexity.

ENVIRONMENTAL SEALING

While CNC milling can provide smooth, precise surfaces for gaskets, 3D printing can achieve more complex geometry for clever sealing strategies. 004 features a combination of standard O-rings and laser cut, low durometer silicone gaskets for maximum conformity to its 3D printed surfaces.
